40 Video Chat Icebreakers That Get a Real Answer
You know the moment: the call connects, both people smile, and neither knows what to say. Pick one line before you match and that moment stops being a problem.
One rule underneath all forty: ask something they can answer in one breath. Openers fail when they demand effort — an essay question, a compliment that needs a response, or "hi" on its own, which quietly hands the whole conversation to the other person.
Easy — you cannot get these wrong
Curious — for when you want a real conversation
Fast — two-word answers, instant rhythm
Funny — low risk, high return
Warm — when the conversation is already going well
Three that almost never work
- “hi” — nothing to answer. Most people skip within two seconds.
- Anything about their body — reads as a script, ends the call, deserves to.
- “asl?” — belongs to 2004, and tells them you are working through a list.
What to do with the answer
Go one layer down instead of asking something new. They said they are in Córdoba and it is raining? Ask whether rain days are good or bad for them. Two exchanges later you are talking about something real, and neither of you had to be clever.
The full mechanics are in how to talk to strangers. If the technical side is what is stopping you, start with first video chat tips instead.

Opener questions
What is a good icebreaker for a video chat?
A question the other person can answer without thinking: where they are, what time it is there, what they are supposed to be doing instead. Easy beats clever every time.
How long should an opener be?
One sentence. If it needs a second sentence to make sense, it is a monologue, and the other person has already skipped.
Should I compliment someone straight away?
A compliment about something they chose — a shirt, a poster behind them, a haircut — lands. A compliment about their body reads as a script and usually ends the call.
What do I do if they do not answer?
Answer it yourself, briefly, and ask again differently. If there is still nothing, skip. Not everyone is in a talking mood and that is fine.
