What a filter actually does to a pool

Filters do not add anyone; they subtract. Ask for one country plus one language plus one interest and a pool of thousands becomes a pool of a handful — at three in the morning, possibly a pool of nobody. That is why heavily filtered products either show long queues or quietly relax the filter and hope you do not notice.

Themed rooms are the same mechanic with a social skin. They work when the theme is genuinely something to talk about, and collapse when the theme is just a label people selected on their way in.

Which one you should be using

• You have twenty free minutes and no agenda. Pure random. Volume is the feature.
• You are practising a language. Filter by language and accept the wait.
• You want a conversation, not a survey. Random, but stay longer on the ones that work.
• You want a guarantee about who appears. No product in this category can honestly give you one.

The honesty test

Any service offering filters should be judged on what it does when the filter cannot be satisfied. Telling you the pool is thin is honest. Silently widening the filter and matching you anyway is not — and it is common. We keep matching unfiltered and say so on the random page; we would rather under-promise than quietly break a filter.
